Overview

Hestia Custom Sections began as a solution to a limitation I encountered while building a client’s WordPress website. My client needed greater flexibility than the standard Hestia theme offered, so I developed a custom plugin that introduced configurable homepage sections and reusable content blocks.

Although the plugin itself was fairly simple, I treated it as an opportunity to learn more about WordPress development, plugin architecture, and writing maintainable code. It became less about adding features and more about understanding how WordPress plugins interact with existing themes.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was extending an existing theme while keeping the solution maintainable and avoiding unnecessary changes to the theme itself. I also wanted the plugin to integrate naturally with the WordPress editor so that managing content remained intuitive.

What I Learned

This project gave me a much deeper understanding of how WordPress plugins interact with themes, how to structure reusable code, and how to balance functionality with ease of use. It also reinforced the importance of building solutions that are maintainable rather than simply functional.

This portfolio represents both a personal brand and a technical project. Rather than using a template without modification, I wanted to create a website that reflected my own design preferences while remaining fast, accessible, and easy to maintain.

From choosing hosting and registering the domain to configuring DNS, Cloudflare, SSL, and performance optimisations, every part of the website was intentionally planned and built to create a cohesive professional presence.

Design Philosophy

Rather than relying on heavy animations or flashy effects, I wanted the website to feel clean, readable, and timeless. Every decision—from the restrained colour palette to the typography and spacing—was made to keep the focus on the content while creating a consistent visual identity.

Building the website involved much more than creating pages. I configured hosting, DNS, SSL, Cloudflare, and performance settings while developing a consistent visual identity through typography, spacing, colour, and branding.

What I Learned

This project strengthened my understanding of web hosting, domain management, DNS, CDN configuration, SSL certificates, and responsive design. It also reinforced how much thoughtful design and attention to detail contribute to a polished user experience.

Challenges

Every project required balancing the client’s vision with practical considerations such as usability, accessibility, long-term maintenance, and budget. Many clients weren’t technical, so creating solutions they could confidently update themselves became just as important as the initial design.

Working with real clients taught me that technical skills alone are not enough. Communication, understanding requirements, managing expectations, and designing around the user’s needs are just as important as writing code.

What I Learned

Running Eli’s Tech has taught me far more than technical troubleshooting. I’ve developed stronger communication, project planning, customer service, and problem-solving skills while learning how to adapt technical solutions to individual needs.

As I begin my Computer Science degree at North Carolina State University, this page will continue to grow with coursework, personal software projects, research, hackathons, and open-source contributions.
